Revised
October 8, 2008
Unless otherwise noted, the format for Tuesday night gatherings
will include 45 minutes of sitting meditation begining
at 7:00 PM followed by a dharma talk.
October, 2008
10/7/08 The Tuesday night group will not meet this Tuesday,
Oct 7th, because of the second presidential debate that is being
held this evening.
In view of the recent series of dharma talks and interactive
evenings on Politics and the Dharma, it strikes me as important to encourage
sangha participants to watch the debate and to get involved in the important
political discussion that is currently going on in the United States.
If you've attended some or all of our recent gatherings, you might
think of this coming Tuesday as the "lab" for our mini-course
on conscious political participation. Please bear in mind the principles
of engaged spirituality that we discussed a few weeks back:
- Your whole life is your practice. Nothing is excluded.
- Be mindful
of your intentions when talking about or dealing with political
matters.
- Explore skillful ways to work with negative emotions when
they arise.
- Reflect on the Buddha's teaching on attachment to
view. Embrace your views and support your chosen candidates with
passion and energy while at the same time, remembering that all
views are relative and not absolute.
- Allow yourself to be fully involved
while also practicing the art of letting go of attachment to
results.
- Trust your own intuitive wisdom regarding what kind of
contributions you choose to make in terms of time,
money, and energy.
- Reflect upon the Noble 8 Fold Path as it applies
to your participation in political and social causes.
